About Me

My photo
Behind Every Cloud is a Kindred Spirit (BECKS)I lost my grandfather when I was 17. I had a VERY difficult time getting over it. How could I still communicate with him? I loved him so much I didn't think I could live without him. I read everything I could get my hands on to do with the "afterlife" and that started it all...the love of Ghost Hunting and the Paranormal. I have been researching the paranormal for over 37 years!! It is my way of staying in touch with my grandfather. Being a Ghost Hunter is not always as exciting as it seems on TV. Many nights I have sat in the dark and not a thing happened. BUT it is those times you DO get that one voice, that one explainable picture or have an experience that sends chills down your back that makes it sooo worth it all!!! My purpose of this blog is not to make people believe in ghosts but maybe to open their minds just a little bit... I LOVE this crazy thing called Ghost Hunting. It is as much a part of me as breathing. I am just a girl that refuses to accept we can't still contact our loved ones after they die. My grandfather won't let me.

Jefferson Davis Hospital in Houston, TX

Hi everyone.  I know its been a while since I posted last, but I have just been very busy.  I didn't forget you. :)

Above are pictures of the Jefferson Davis Hospital in Houston, Tx  that were taken a couple of years ago.  This landmark was built in 1924 and often referred to as one of the most haunted buildings in America, was built atop a burial ground for confederate soldiers, slaves and city leaders.  The Jefferson Davis  Hospital sits creepily along the Buffalo Bayou near White Oak Dr.  The building was recently renovated and transformed into the Elder Street Artist Lofts.  The hospital is said to have spirits such as nurses, doctors, and patients that still roam its halls.  Many have gone into this place and have had their own personal experiences such as being watched , seeing shadows, and smelling sterilization solutions in certain areas.

This hospital was built upon a site of about 3,000 graves of civil war and yellow fever victims, from when it was a cemetery in the 1800's.  During some excavation work done in the area, approximately 60 "black earth graves" were uncovered.  The common characteristics of these graves were the orientation of graves East to West(the head), and body was wrapped in a shroud and buried without a coffin.  Because the graves were filled with fresh soil of high organic nature they are called "black earth graves".

I went to the Jefferson Davis Hospital a couple of years ago, and I have to tell you...IT IS CREEPY!!!!! A friend of mine took me there, during the day, but HE was to afraid to get out of the car and come in with me.  So, I put on my "big girl shoes" and went in alone.  The smell, oh man... the smell of sterilization solution was overwhelming!!!!!  To the point I thought I was going to be physically sick.  That really bothered me, because how could that smell be that STRONG back from the 1800's????  It wasn't in just a couple of places, it smelled that way the whole time I was there.

There are people living here so you have to be respectful of that.  The are signs that say "Residents Only" but.....lets just say....I must not have seen that sign until I had left. lol ssshhhhh   I just snapped a few pictures in the entry way and it was deadly quite.  I walked up and down the hallway taking pictures, which I will post later, but you could absolutely feel what it was like a long time ago when it was a hospital...the sadness...the concern, much like you would feel in a hospital today.  The residents have the doors decorated in their own styles, but that doesn't matter at all.  You still feel sadness.  I decided to be really brave and go up stairs.  The were very narrow and creepy.  I have to say that after all my years of going to "haunted places and graveyards" this place really made me uncomfortable. I walked all the way to the top floor on the stairs taking pictures.  I didn't stay long, even though it was in the day, I just wanted to get out of there.

I am posting this post about the Jefferson because I am going back to Houston next week and will be revisiting this place.  Hopefully, this time at night.  I was hoping that maybe someone could tell me what you know about this hospital or have been there and had personal experiences.  I would love to know more about this place.

That's it for now, you guys take care.

I was just outside the Jefferson hospital delivery some doors to a church across the street.....stop and read the historic marker and saw that there was a gravesite back in the 1800 and then hospital built on top of it later. I was wondering why there were cars in parkling lot didn't know people lived there actually...WOW! Also, didn't know you could just walk in weird but the most intriguing thing was that there was a grave site before so I knew it had to be haunted.....and how can those people live there when it smells so bad!

Chris. I thought the SAME THING!!!!!! The SMELL is awful! Did you think it smelled like Sterilization Solution? And doesn't it just give you the creeps??? Yes. I was able to just walk in and walk around. I tried to be discreet about taking pics because people do live there. I went up the stairs and got a few good pics of orbs but I didn't stay that long because the smell was making me sick!

I just stumbled across this site, but I wanted to share my experience from when I was a teenager and went there before the renovations; as a matter of fact, I am just finding out this place was renovated and is now being inhabited. I'm not exactly sure when it was because it was so long ago, but I want to say it was 2001 because a friend of mine had just gotten her license. We were always looking for random things to do especially "scary" things. I am not sure how, but we heard about the Jefferson David Hospital and how it was supposedly haunted. Naturally it peaked our interest so we decided to check it out. There about 6 of us who went that night (2 guys and 4 girls). I'm a planner, so before we went I made sure I had flashlights and a pocket knife. I didn't grow up in the best place (ghetto) so I was more concerned about random squatters/homeless/gang members than ghosts. This was the reason for the knife. In any case, I had the supplies and we were off. When we got there the place looked like an old hospital/insane asylum that you would see in a scary movie; I mean all the bells and whistles of a Hollywood production, but this was real. Barbed wire fence surrounded the place and weeds and trees had take control of the building. Almost all of the windows had either been smashed out painted with graffiti, some covered with plywood. I honestly didn't want to go in, but I'm a big guy and didn't want to show my fear especially in front of the ladies. We found a opening in the fence and made our way in to the stairs at the front of the building. We went in though the barely there doors and like you can imagine started oooohhhing and aaaahhhing. At first, the place just appeared really filthy and smelly. We walked through the halls and rooms always in a straight line and I got stuck being the anchor. I was scared because for one it was dark, secondly all of the random demonic writing on the walls, but mostly because my flashlight kept turning off. No joke, I placed brand new batteries in this thing and tested it over and over and even had spare batteries on me which I replaced with the "old" ones. Couldn't explain it and kept it to myself. We decided to leave when we were in the stairwell and heard noises on the top floor. Rather than see if it was a ghost or human we took off. The girls freaked on account of me freaking them out which in turn freaked me out and we ran, literally ran out of there. I didn't bother looking back because, well let's face it, I have watched one too many scary movies and there are certain things you just don't do, like look back to see if anything is staring back at you. Maybe there was or maybe there wasn't. In any case, I personally didn't experience anything paranormal besides my flashlight going off randomly and the usual chills down my spine, but all I can say is it was scary and I never went back.

(sept.7,2014) OMG!!!! That is such a great story!!! And I might add, a very funny one to. I understand about being scared and NOT wanting to turn around and SEE what is behind you or making noses. LOL But, hey it happens to the best of us!!! When I was there, just walking around the place was creepy. Out back where they burned the bodies..... just was SCARY!!! But even going inside this building alone(because my big, brave friend wouldn't get out of the car!!! And it was a guy, btw. LOL) made me a little nervous. The silence in the building was even creepy. You would think that you might hear radio's of TV's on through the doors of the residents there, but there wasn't! I walked up and down the halls taking pictures and the SMELL of sterilization solution was soooo strong, it was making me physically sick. Did you notice it...the smell??? And I remember just almost being overcome with a feeling of sadness. I could almost visualize doctors and nurses running in and out of the rooms.
Anyway, THANK YOU so much for your story. I enjoyed it very much! Becky

I was born at Jeff Davis in December 1962 and was kept in an incubator there for 4 months due to my premature birth. I was taken home from the hospital by my adoptive parents. Many, many tragic, bizarre events have occurred during my lifetime. My biological mother died tragically at age 20 in 1967. I was wondering if anyone else born, given birth, or was admitted to Jeff Davis for any length of time has had an usually tragic life/death . Please contact me at simplewoman123@yahoo.com if you would like to discuss this.

Tammy. So am I to understand that you feel that being born in this hospital has caused you to have tragic and bizarre things happen in your life? Let me know if anyone else that was born in this hospital feels the same way. Thanks for sharing your story.

I was born there in March of 1979. No tragic deaths but there has been alot of death. And I believe that nearly every home I have ever lived in has been haunted. I think I am sensitive to these things and I never really knew why but reading these comments definately sparks my curiosity.

That is soooo cool that you were born in the hospital!!!! So can I ask....when you say you think every house you've ever lived in has been haunted....what kind of activity or experiences have you had? A couple of people has that were born there said the same thing you have.

I have had things fall and break, captured unexplained orbs in photos, my dog wont go near certain parts of the house, I've felt someone or something sit or lay down beside me when I was was home alone... The list goes on and on. I would be really interested to hear other stories like this. carlyabernathy5198@gmail.com. I keep meaning to ask my mom if she had any unusual experiences as a patient there. I will def have to ask her now!

Becky said...

Wow. Your NOT the first person who has said things like that. I don't know how "being born" in the hospital would cause paranormal activity unless someway a spirit "attached itself" to you as an infant. In that case it could even be a child spirit or a "Motherly" spirit......hhhuummm

I will update after I speak to my mom. She doesn't know about the hospitals history so I can't wait to hear what she has to say about her time as a patient there. She gave birth to my older brother there also, so she stayed more than once.

There is no way any of these people were born at this hospital because it was only open from 1925-1939. A second hospital by the same name was later opened at a different location (Southwest) in Houston. Although this hospital was used for storage and such from 1939-1985 and since then abandon until 2003.
I had done my research before going ghost hunting there when I was a teenager. I did experience many times every time my friends and I would go. We would hear someone running at the above floor from us when it was only us there. We also heard the elevator start up when there is no elevator just the shaft of it. We also experience the basement (what used to be the morgue) get very cold on a hot day. As well as orbs and shadows among other things.

Yes, there is know doubt this place is creepy. The smell alone will get you. When I was there we got some great pics back behind the place where they used to burn the bodies. I really want to go back there.
